Selecting a service provider: What you need to know
Finding the right service provider isn't as hard as it seems. You just need to know what to look for.
If you own a computer at some point you will be seeking out service. Whatever the reason - hardware failure, moving to a new computer, or looking for service for your business - finding the right service provider can be a daunting and often frustrating process for people who expect a good experience and great results.
The good news is that finding a service provider is significantly easier if you know what to look for. As it is with most professions, the quality of service one can expect is generally affected by only a handful of factors. Qualifications, experience and professionalism are key factors that any computer owner should look for in selecting a service provider.
So what qualifications should one look for? Nearly all major hardware and software manufacturers have established certification programs that recognize technicians by certifying them when they have achieved a certain level of knowledge related to a technology. In the United States, CompTIA A+ certification has been regarded as a fundamental certification for any computer repair technician for years. Many companies including Apple, Cisco, Microsoft have designed their own training paths with many different levels of certifications. The question to ask your technician: Are you certified by the manufacturer to work on my computer or operating system?
But certification is only the starting point. Experience and certification together can represent far more value than certification alone. How experienced with the technology are they? What is the provider's reputation in the industry? Were you referred by another satisfied customer or a qualified, knowledgeable source? Oftentimes a referral by a discriminating, well-informed customer or vendor can speak volumes about a provider's experience level and reliability.
